When My Husband Believes in My Book More Than I Do

It's true. And while he's read other writing of mine, I've only let him read the first chapter of my book. He seems to think it's only a matter of finishing the book before it's published. I've tried to explain to him that it may take years and many books before I get there. (Because I refuse to consider I'll "never" get there.) But I suppose that is what I need. Someone who believes in me that much.

If my book ever comes up in a conversation involving me, my husband, and Somebody Else he will always praise my writing. And even though he drafts contracts every day and is a stranger to middle-grade girl fiction--his praise means something. Plus, his optimism is catching. I mean, what IF?

What if this book really is good enough?

I love that you're husband is so supportive. It really helps to have a cheerleader, because boy does it get tough sometimes.

I didn't realize you wrote MG girl books! That's just what I write. A PRETTY PIRATE PICKLE sounds adorable.

    1. I didn't know I wrote middle grade girl books until I wrote this one. I thought I was supposed to write hauntingly beautiful young adult tragedies. Guess I was wrong.

    1. Thanks, Donna. I'm excited to see what GUTGAA is all about, other than being a horrible-sounding acronym.

  3. Not if, but when. Right? Truth be told, I won't let The Wife read my stuff until its polished. Well...because what if she doesn't...

(Hopping over based on our mutual friendship of the amazing Matthew MacNish.)

  4. It will be good enough. TBH my husband doesn't really read anything I write because he hates fiction. Makes it tricky.

  5. What an amazing man you've got. :) My husband is the same way-- he's absolutely convinced my book will make it. Let's hope both our husbands are right!

  6. That's awesome, Jessie! Everyone needs someone like that in their corner. That kind of support means the world.

I'm somewhere between you and Patti. My hubs isn't a huge fan of fiction, and there's little of mine he's read. But he's my biggest promoter and flag waver.

You WILL make it. Perseverance is more than half the battle. And sounds like your fantastic story is the other half. :)

  7. It's scary isn't it? I'm with you Jessie. A neighbor/friend calls my husband patient, we laugh about tha, it's been 13 years since my first book, a memoir came out. I have a lot of material for at least 3 more memoirs but couldn't seem to finish any of them. During NaNoWriMo 2010 I wrote the 1st draft of a novel I'm trying to get ready to send out. Every night he listened to what I'd written that day and evening, and as far as he was concerned it was ready to go on December 1. He's not losing hope, it helps, even if the same can drive me nuts. Keep on, keeping on, Jessie, we'll get there, as long as we do. Write On!
